Maico
1974.5 501 GP - Joe Funk of Pennsylvania sold us this treasure. It is a "true" factory 1974.5 Framed GP 501. Early in 1974, when the rear shocks were moved up the top frame mounts did not have the two holes in the gusset, like the later ones did. Because of this, a lot of people think that it is an aftermarket modificaiton, like a Wheelsmith modification. Please see the supporting picture from the Maico Service Manual showing this top shock mount as being original. There can't be many Maicos like this one, especially 501s. The AHRMA shock travel guide Here labels these top mounts as “rare” and that is the only time that word is used on any bike on that document. Joe actually campaigned a Maico 125, back in the day, and has restored/owned over 70 Maicos. His work is absolutely pristine!
